I have befriended many hobos in my young life. I would visit them, talk to them, give them money, and even at one point took a few in. What I've discovered, however, is that in true reality they are in the streets out of choice and live off of everyone else's mercy. They will betray you the second it comes down to either you or their vice, which is unfortunately always either alcohol, drugs, or because they literally make a better living out on the streets. I know every homeless man or woman's tricks and turns. Now. I'm sure not ALL fall under what I've experienced. But..... This has been a very common thing is just about all of them.

I understand what you are saying, Ari. I too have met many homeless people who are less than scrupulous. What I really like about Dennis' book - his project - is that he shows that our perceptions of the homeless often color the good that we can do for those who are hurting, scared, alone, and injured by the world. That includes those addicted to alcohol and drugs. These stories - these conversations - are a reminder to everyone how easy it is to fall into the category of homeless. And the beauty of Dennis' message is that he does not judge. We cannot know the what or why behind every person that we meet, but we can try to be kind always to everyone. (P.S. There are quite a few 'bad' persons that Dennis meets on his wanderings around the city!)
